Celebrating the Natural Beauty of Wood

At Independent Restaurant Furniture Co., we believe that the most beautiful materials in the world are the ones that tell a story. Wood is not manufactured to be perfect — it is grown, shaped by seasons, and marked by time. That's precisely what makes it extraordinary.

This page serves as both a celebration and a practical guide helping you understand the natural properties of the solid wood table tops we craft, so you can protect your investment, set the right expectations, and enjoy the authentic character of your IRF table top for years to come.

Every Table Top is One of a Kind

The characteristics of the wood used to build your IRF table top may vary from any samples, swatches, or product photography due to the inherent nature of the material. Wood is a living, breathing product. There will always be variation including knots, grain patterns, texture differences, and natural color shifts from plank to plank.

All of our table tops are completely handcrafted by skilled Amish craftsmen in the USA. We make no representation or guarantee that any product will appear exactly like another. We produce every piece to represent our marketing photography as closely as possible, but the natural uniqueness of each plank is something we celebrate not something we engineer away.

Wood Moves. That's Not a Defect — It's Nature.

Wood is a natural product that responds to its environment. Temperature shifts and humidity changes cause wood to expand and contract over time. Occasionally, these changes may be visible in the physical appearance of your table top and that is completely normal.

Small surface cracks may develop as the wood adjusts to its environment. In the timber industry, these are known as "checks." Checks are not faults or defects — they are the natural characteristic of solid wood responding to its surroundings. They do not compromise the structural integrity or longevity of your table top in any way.

How We Build for Longevity

Every IRF wood table top is built with long-term performance in mind:

  • Perfectly seasoned wood — Each plank is seasoned to an optimum moisture content before production, reducing the likelihood of seasonal expansion and contraction from the start.
  • Steel reinforcement bars — Integrated steel support bars are built into the underside of every top, specifically engineered to minimize warping and maintain structural integrity over time.
  • Multi-stage quality control — Every table top goes through a stringent, multi-checkpoint quality inspection process before it leaves our facility. When an IRF table top ships, it has earned it.
  • Fully finished surface — Our two-step catalyzed lacquer sealer and premium urethane top coat mean your table top arrives ready for commercial use. No additional oils, varnishes, or finishing products are needed or recommended.

Humidity & Your Table Top

Extreme humidity levels are harmful to any wood species. To prevent damage, we strongly recommend maintaining an ideal humidity level of 50% year round in your dining environment.

Some variance is normal and manageable — staying within a 40% to 60% humidity range is considered safe for your table top. What you want to avoid most is rapid, dramatic swings in humidity level. Wood is far more likely to crack and check when humidity changes suddenly rather than gradually. Our table tops are specifically built to compensate for some fluctuation — but there is a limit, and consistent conditions are always best.

Two simple preventative measures:

  1. Purchase a hygrometer (humidity gauge) — A simple, inexpensive tool that lets you monitor your humidity levels regularly and ensure you're staying within the safe range.
  2. Control your climate — If humidity is too high, a dehumidifier is a straightforward fix. If your environment runs too dry, a humidifier helps balance moisture levels and protect your wood.

Placement & Environmental Considerations

Where and how you place your IRF table top has a direct impact on its long-term performance. We strongly advise:

  • Avoid placing table tops near direct heat sources — radiators, ovens, heating vents, or open flames accelerate moisture loss and increase the risk of checking and warping.
  • Avoid placement beside large windows, bi-folding doors, or conservatories — areas with significant temperature and light fluctuation place added stress on solid wood. IRF cannot guarantee performance of table tops placed in these conditions.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight exposure — UV exposure can cause color and finish fading over time, even with our protective top coat.

Daily Care & Maintenance

Keeping your IRF table top looking its best is straightforward:

  • Always use coasters or mats when placing hot, cold, or wet items on the surface.
  • Wipe spills immediately with a soft, dry cloth — do not allow liquids to sit on the surface.
  • Clean with water only — avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, or solvent-based products that can damage the finish.
  • No additional finishing is required — do not apply oils, waxes, or varnishes to your IRF table top. The surface is fully finished and ready for use as delivered.
